Decode a VIN
How it works
- Positions, model codes, engine letters and year letters come from our Identification page (Lowbrow Customs VIN guide; Rider, Sep 2017; CVO codes H-D Parts Catalog, 1999 FXR2, H-D Parts Catalog, 1999 FXR3, H-D Parts Catalog, 2000 FXR4).
- The check digit (position 9) is recalculated with the federal formula (49 CFR Part 565). A mismatch can mean a typo, a misread stamp or a number that needs a closer look.
- Year letters repeat every 30 years, so the decoder only reads them for FXR years (1982 to 1994 and 1999 to 2000).
- A decoded VIN is not proof of a bike's history. Check theft and total-loss records with NICB VINCheck (NICB VINCheck) and recalls with NHTSA (NHTSA recall lookup).
