Period Road Tests

1982 to 2000

What the magazines measured when these bikes were new. Period road tests of the FXR family from 1982 to 2000, grouped by model and listed oldest first, with the figures each magazine printed.

About these tests

Most figures come from Cycle World's own online archive and from scans of Cycle Guide on the Internet Archive. Each test links to the article or the scanned issue. We never copy or host magazine pages.

Read the numbers as a snapshot, not a ranking. Magazines weighed bikes differently (dry, half tank, tank empty or full), tested on different days and strips, and sometimes calculated top speed rather than measuring it. Where a magazine said how it measured, we say so. Prices are the list price printed with the test.

Have a period test we are missing, such as Motorcyclist, Rider or a UK magazine? Send the issue and page.

Modified FXRs

Cycle World's December 1991 drag-strip story took an S&S-built 1990 FXR Low Rider with a 114 cubic inch (1868cc) engine, which S&S rated at 163 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. It ran the quarter mile in 10.99 s at 123.96 mph and reached 141 mph. The stock transmission did not survive and was rebuilt with heavy-duty aftermarket parts (Cycle World, Dec 1991).

Tests from Motorcyclist, Rider, Motorcycle Consumer News and UK magazines are not online.
