About FXR Archive

What this site is, how we decide what is true, and how you can help.

What this site is

The FXR deserves to be remembered. FXR Archive was built to memorialize it and to gather as much FXR information as possible in one place, as an archive.

FXR Archive is a free, independent reference to the Harley-Davidson FXR family: the 1982 to 1994 production bikes and the 1999 to 2000 CVO FXR2, FXR3 and FXR4.

It is a fan project. It is not run by Harley-Davidson, a dealer or a parts seller, and it has no ads.

The Legendary FXR

Harley built it the hard way. Erik Buell and the engineering team chased the wobble out of the frame, and Harley held the launch until it handled right, even though the company badly needed the sales (Hot Bike, "The Saga of the FXR"). The result was the best-handling Big Twin of its day. It could run all day on the highway and still make a back road fun. It was also expensive and hard to build, which is why the cheaper Dyna replaced it (Hot Bike, "The Saga of the FXR"; Rider, Sep 2017). Riders have missed it ever since.

Why it still matters. More than 30 years after the last regular FXR left the line, people are still riding them hard and building them up. Today's club-style bikes owe a lot to the FXR, and builders still make frames and parts for it. When Harley launched its custom CVO line in 1999, the bike it chose to bring back was the FXR.

How we rate confidence

Confirmed

Backed by a named, checkable source such as a period magazine test, a factory statement or a builder account.

Probable

Good but indirect or disputed evidence. We say what the doubt is.

Reported

A figure from a secondary or enthusiast source that we have not checked against factory records.

Conflict

Good sources disagree. We show each version and who said it.

Unverified

We could not confirm it in a published source yet. You will see a small unverified flag next to it, and a note in that page's Sources explains the flag.
