1984 FXRDG Tank Decals and Emblem Template
The gold tank emblem from the 1984 FXRDG Disc Glide, redrawn as a decal and stencil template. Left and right sides and the pinstripe. Free, download below.
What it is
The 1984 FXRDG Disc Glide came with "Genuine Harley-Davidson" in script on the tank. On the bike in our photo it's a gold "Genuine" script over an oval with the name in it, a row of speed lines running back from the oval, a small MADE IN U.S.A. line, and a teardrop pinstripe around the whole panel. All one flat gold.
Repaint a Disc Glide tank and this is the part you can't buy off the shelf. So we redrew it.
How it was applied
An owner's account says the factory sprayed the gold over a template. We have not found that in any factory paper, so take it as one owner's word, not a spec. Either way a stencil and spray gun is how most painters will put it back on.
How it was redrawn
FXR Archive redrew it by hand from one photo of an owner's tank, the one shown here. The lettering was built on an open license typeface (Cinzel) and turned into outlines. The script, oval and speed lines were traced by eye, then the art was laid back over the photo to check it.
It's close, not exact. One photo shot at an angle only tells you so much.
Size
Our estimate from the photo: the logo is 12.5 in long and 2.39 in tall, and the oval is 6.19 in long. That's an estimate, not a factory number.
Measure the oval on your tank or on a good original, divide by 6.19, and print at that scale. A 6.5 in oval works out to 105%. Scale everything by the same number.
Color
One flat gold. The gold in the files was picked off a screen, not a paint chip, and we don't know the factory code. Match it to your own tank or the gold that's left on it, in daylight, with your painter.
What's in the pack
- Letter size PDF, 4 pages. The logo in two pieces. Piece 2 butts up against the oval.
- 11x17 PDF, 5 pages. The logo in one piece, plus the pinstripe.
- Gold pages to hold up on the tank as a fit check. Black pages to cut a stencil or vinyl from.
- Left and right sides. The right side is mirrored so the speed lines run to the rear on both sides.
- The teardrop pinstripe outline, optional, about 15.4 x 5.1 in (estimate).
- Vector SVG files for a sign shop or a vinyl plotter.
Painter tips
- Print at 100%, no fit to page. Measure the 1 in check bar before you cut anything.
- Cut the stencil from low-tack stencil vinyl. A plotter cuts the fine lines cleaner than a knife.
- On Letter paper the logo comes in two pieces. Piece 2 butts against the oval.
- The tank is curved. Lay the stencil from the center out so it doesn't wrinkle.
- Light coats. Pull the mask while the paint is still soft, then clear over it.
- The pinstripe goes on with tape or by hand. Left and right are mirror images.
Not confirmed yet: the exact size, the speed line count, the MADE IN U.S.A. line, how far the tail drops, the exact letterforms, the pinstripe shape, the factory method and the color. Have an original tank or factory paperwork? Tell us.
