What Is a Harley FXR?
The Harley-Davidson FXR is the rubber-mount Big Twin Harley built from 1982 to 1994, plus three CVO runs in 1999 and 2000. Stiff frame, smooth engine, and the best handling Big Twin of its day. Here's the short version and where to go next.

What an FXR is
An FXR is a Big Twin built on an all-welded steel frame with the engine and five-speed gearbox hung on rubber mounts plus stabilizer links (Rider, Sep 2017). The rubber takes the shake out of the bars and pegs. The frame keeps the bike straight when you lean on it.
Hot Bike reads the name as F for Big Twin, X for the Sportster-style front end, R for rubber mounts (Hot Bike, "The Saga of the FXR"). Regular production ran the 1982 to 1994 model years. Harley came back for the CVO FXR2 and FXR3 in 1999 and the FXR4 in 2000 (Cycle World, May 1999). Those were the last FXRs built.
Short history
Harley's management bought the company back from AMF in 1981, and the FXR went on sale that summer as a 1982 model (Hot Bike, "Separating the Men From the Boys"). The plan: take the Shovelhead and five-speed from the FLT Tour Glide and build a lighter, sportier bike around them. The Tour Glide frame didn't work out, so the team drew a new one, and Harley held the launch until the wobble was sorted (Hot Bike, "The Saga of the FXR").
The FXRT came in 1983, the Evolution engine in 1984 and belt drive in 1985. By 1986 the FXR had taken over the Super Glide and Low Rider names. The frame was costly to build by hand, so the Dyna arrived in 1991 and the FXR was done after 1994 (Hot Bike, "The Saga of the FXR").

About 96,775 built in the 1982 to 1994 run and 2,802 CVO bikes. Production numbers derived from The Bazaar Book of FXRs by Nick Hinzo. Years follow the model pages; where sources disagree, the model page shows each version.
FXR years and models, year by yearWhich models were built in which year, the engine, and what changed. What makes the frame special
The backbone is boxed tubing and big stampings welded into one stiff box from the steering head back, with a triangulated rear (Rider, Sep 2017). Harley's chief engineer told Cycle World it was five times stiffer than the FX frame (Cycle World, Dec 1981). The swingarm pivots off the back of the transmission, so the engine, gearbox and swingarm move as one unit on the rubber.
That's why FXRs corner the way they do, and why builders still copy the frame today.
How to identify one
Start with the VIN. It gives you the model code and the model year. Then match the engine case numbers and the frame stamps, and check the features against the model page. Plenty of FXRs have been rebuilt, re-tagged or turned into something else.
Common issues
Most of it is age, not design. The ones we hear about most:
- Late 1984 inner primary bearing leak.
- Stator, regulator and the stator plug.
- The wobble: worn swingarm bushings and tired rubber mounts.
- Wet sumping after the bike sits.
- Heavy clutch pull on early Evos.
What one's worth
Prices swing hard on model, condition, frame rust, paperwork and swaps. A clean FXRT or a CVO is a different animal from a tired FXRS project.

Riding and culture
FXRs never really went away. Riders kept them running, builders kept copying the frame, and the club style crowd made them the bike to have.

FAQ
What is a Harley FXR?
A Harley-Davidson Big Twin built from 1982 to 1994 on a stiff all-welded frame, with the engine and gearbox hung on rubber mounts. Harley built three more limited CVO versions, the FXR2, FXR3 and FXR4, in 1999 and 2000.
What does FXR stand for?
Hot Bike breaks it down as F for Big Twin, X for the Sportster-style front end, and R for the rubber engine mounts.
What years did Harley make the FXR?
The regular run was the 1982 to 1994 model years. The CVO FXR2 and FXR3 came in 1999 and the FXR4 in 2000.
Why do riders like FXRs so much?
The frame. It is far stiffer than the FX frame it replaced, so the bike holds a line in fast corners, and the rubber mounts keep the shake off the bars and pegs.
Is an FXR the same as a Dyna?
No. The Dyna came in 1991 as a cheaper frame to build, and both were sold side by side until the FXR ended in 1994. They share engines and a lot of parts, not the frame.
How do I tell which FXR I have?
Start with the VIN. It carries the model code and model year. Then check the engine case numbers and the frame stamps against the model features.
What is an FXR worth?
It depends on the model, condition, rust, paperwork and what has been swapped. The FXR Archive value calculator gives an estimate in nine quick questions.
