Chart reads assets/data/fxr-interest-index.json. Relative interest from Google Trends, rebased and averaged as described below.

How it is built

Each month we pull US interest-over-time for the basket from Google Trends (Google Trends). Trends reports relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale inside the export window. It is not a count of searches, and it is not comparable to Keyword Planner volume estimates.

For each term, the series is rebased so its value in the published base month equals 100 (or, if that month is zero for a sparse term, the term's first non-zero month). The composite is the equal-weight average of those rebased series, then scaled so the composite itself equals 100 in the published base month.

Published base month for this beta: October 2020. Six of the eight terms rebase there. harley fxr parts and fxr vs dyna are often 0 or <1 in Trends (low signal); they stay in the basket and rebase to their first non-zero month. Literal <1 cells are treated as 0.5 for the math. Early 2004 to about 2006 is patchy. Headline latest, MoM and YoY use the last complete calendar month; the current month stays on the chart as provisional.

Equal weights. Bare fxrs is excluded from the composite (too much non-Harley noise). Batch exports that share the overlap term harley fxr are joined on that common scale.

What it is not

  • Do not read the index as absolute US search volume. Trends is relative interest only.
  • Website Trends re-scales each export. We use matching all-years monthly US exports for the published series.
  • Sparse terms and early years can bounce. Treat short MoM moves on thin terms with care. The in-progress calendar month is provisional on Trends; headline stats skip it.
  • Refresh is monthly by hand for now. An official Trends API path may automate later (Google Trends API alpha).
