Twin Cam Swap… Is It Still an FXR?
No. Thanks for reading.
Fine, we'll explain. The FXR earned its legend with a rubber-mounted Shovel and then the Evo, wrapped in a frame Erik Buell helped engineer. That chassis was tuned around those motors. It wasn't a generic box you drop whatever motor you like into.
Then someone gets bored, buys a Twin Cam out of a 2003 Dyna, and starts cutting mounts. Harley didn't build the Twin Cam until 1999, five years after the last regular FXR rolled out of York. Putting one in your '89 doesn't make it a "modernized FXR." It makes it a time traveler with an identity crisis.
Think of it as a heart transplant from a stranger who also wants to keep your house. The tank says FXR. The frame says FXR. The engine says "Hi, I'm from the Clinton administration's second term." The title still says FXR, and so does the guy at bike night, loudly.
Is it fast? Sure. Is it fun? Probably. Is it an FXR? About as much as a Mustang with a Prius drivetrain is a Mustang.
Keep the Evo. Fix the Evo. Love the Evo. That's an FXR.
